Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
